About the Role

The Campaigns Officer, FoPA is responsible for building the #StandAsMyWitness Campaign, curate support mechanisms that ensure the safety, security, health and wellbeing of people and communities who exercise their right to freedom of peaceful assemblies. The role will provide support to multi-stakeholder engagement that facilitates actualizing international norms governing freedom of peaceful assemblies, including coordinating support for strategic litigation and sanctions for violations. Support communities, protest leaders and protesters to express their collective views as a cornerstone of a free and open society.

Key Requirements

  • A minimum of 5-7 years’ work experience in campaigns and supporting communities engaged in issues related to freedom of peaceful assembly
  • Master’s degree in international relations, social studies, politics, development studies or a social science discipline.
  • Effectively manage campaigns that advocate for the release of those arrested for exercising their right to assembly freely
  • Develop and manage relationships with protest leaders, representatives of civil society and make connections between protesters and those who support protests including human rights lawyers and other service providers
  • Lead CIVICUS support for the freedom of peaceful assemblies and make connections internally with research, communications and advocacy activities related to the freedom of peaceful assembly
  • Budget management skills and ability to facilitate agile support to communities engaged peaceful protests
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in English and one other UN language.
  • Experience or knowledge of civic space issues in the Middle East or Latin America an added advantage
  • Preferred Location Latin America and the Caribbean or Middle East or Johannesburg.
